Who needs secondary DNS?

Secondary DNS is for ISPs, hosting providers, and other organizations who want to run their own primary DNS server with the added reliability of geographically diverse secondary servers.

How long does it take to activate a new account?

Accounts are created automatically and you can begin using your account immediately.

Can I get a free trial?

We realize that many people don't know how many queries they use monthly and may be hesitant to sign up without knowing how much it will cost. With reasonable TTL values, most zones use fewer queries than you might think.

With that in mind, we offer a 1 month risk free trial to all new customers. Sign up, and if after the first month you decide to cancel your service for any reason, you won't owe us a dime.

How are secondary DNS charges calculated?

On the first of each month, we calculate the number of queries used for your account the previous month. That number is divided by 1 million and rounded up to the nearest million. For example, if your zones generated 7.7 million queries last month, you would be billed for 8 million queries at $0.50 per million for a total of $4.00.

There is a minimum charge of $5.00 per month.

How do I see my query statistics?

Our DNS control panel displays your monthly zone statistics for each zone and for the entire account. This information is updated every 5 minutes.

How long does it take to transfer a new zone?

Our name servers are updated immediately when you create a zone or change the primary IP and will initiate a zone transfer within a few minutes.

How many name servers do you have?

We currently have 5 authoritative name servers:

Each server is completely independent so an outage at one will not affect name resolution for your zones.

Do I have to manually add new domains to my account?

You can add new zones to your account using our API or using our web interface. The web interface supports adding many zones in bulk.

Do you have an API for managing DNS zones?

Yes. Our API lets you remotely add and remove zones from your account. This could be used to automatically create zones when a new site is added to a control panel, for instance. For documentation, read the knowledgebase article.

Do you support vanity name servers?

Yes, you can register name servers using your own domain and point them to our servers.

Do you support multiple master servers?

Yes, you can specify more than one master server for each secondary zone. Our servers will rotate through the list of masters in the event of a failure of one of your servers.

Do you support DNSSEC?

Yes, our servers will transfer DNSSEC records and serve them authoritatively. If you have a zone that is signed with DNSSEC, you can use DNS Unlimited for secondary DNS and DNSSEC will work correctly.

Do you support IPv6?

All of our name servers support IPv4 and IPv6. Our servers can answer queries from IPv6 clients and our master servers can transfer zones from IPv6 servers.
